Revival and Mission

                                                                                                                Mark Ger

Acts 1:8

Isaiah 49:5-6

Introduction

In the book of Isaiah, chapter 49, the passage in the Bible speaks of how Jesus will come to restore Israel; however, he is not only coming to restore Israel. Jesus is also going to become a light for the Gentiles, which means he will bring salvation to the ends of the earth. The same concept is also written in Acts, chapter 1, verse 8. Jesus asks the disciples to wait for the Holy Spirit to come upon them so that they are able to preach the gospel to the ends of the earth. So, this morning, we want to see how mission is our most important task. But, to be able to accomplish the great commission of the Lord, we need the Holy Spirit to revive us.

First of all, I want to talk about mission. Let’s take a look at a slideshow of missions.

1.      From Acts 1:8, we can see that Jesus wants us to preach the gospel and be his witnesses in Jerusalem and to the ends of the earth. In Greek, the conjunction “and” means at the same time. Because many people have an incorrect assumption that, if they have not evangelized to all of Jerusalem( San Gabriel Valley), then there is no need to go to Judea (other states) or overseas to preach the gospel and do church planting. Nevertheless, the Bible states that we must not only evangelize to Jerusalem(San Gabriel Valley), but also to all areas of the Unites States, and to do church planting all over the world. The reason for this is that there are 6,767 unreached people groups in the world. Matthew 24:14 tells us that one of the conditions of Jesus’ second coming is that the gospel must be preached to all nations and then the end will come. Here, the meaning of “nations” in Greek is referring to ethnic groups. Therefore, Jesus is not coming back until these 6,767 unreached people groups have all been evangelized to and have all begun their own churches. That is why all the mission agencies and the churches of the world are working to complete this task.

Ex. Adopting unreached people group. Last Wednesday, the senior pastor of a Chinese church brought a co-worker with him to one of the Indonesian islands that were affected by an earthquake. Their church wanted to adopt one of the unreached people groups in Indonesia, and the pastor went to visit and look at the people groups there. After going there, the pastor chose a people group that the church would use all its efforts to evangelize to. This church only consists of about 80 people, but I believe that they are the first Chinese church in U.S to adopt a people group.

2.      The Importance Of Offering Money and People

A.    Offering Money

˙Matthew 6:21: ‘For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. ’

Ex. In Anaheim, there is a church called Grace Korean Church. In1982,The senior pastor of this church, from the founding of the church, decided with the three families following him to give up 50% of the offerings towards the mission fund. From that moment, until this day, this church has sent out more than 250 missionaries to more than 50 countries in the world. Through Grace Ministries International, churches have been planted all over the world--2,000 in Russia, 600 in Africa, 3,000 in China, 1,000 in Vietnam and many more in South America. This church has 5,000 members; it is not the biggest Korean church. But, they have poured all their strength into mission and so they have become the most successful local church for mission.

˙There was a member of my previous church who was over 70 years old. When I first established a mission organization three years ago, this sister, though she herself received no income, faithfully donated 50 dollars to my organization every month. I believe that this kind of giving is pleasing to God. Even though she could not go out on the mission field herself, through her offering, she will be rewarded by the Lord. So I encourage you to give your money to the mission, which will reveal our hearts’ focus on the mission.

B.     Offering People

˙Not only should we offer up our money, but we should also take action to spread the Word of Jesus Christ. First of all, I encourage you to be a witness of God to your friends, neighbors, family, and community. Many times, I have seen in the San Gabriel Valley pairs of young people riding bicycles, sharing their faith door to door. I believe that you must also know who they are. They are Mormons. Though we know that they are of a cult, they are still very persevering in sharing their faith. Even on hot summer days, when the sun is at its strongest, the Mormons are still out there. On the other hand, I do not see Christians working hard to preach the gospel, as they are. Sometimes I think that if they were not of a cult, I would encourage my daughters to attend their church so that they would also become that devoted.

˙Short-term mission:

Also, I encourage you to go on a short term mission trip. Just like what we have just seen in the slideshow, not one of the brothers and sisters, after they have attended a China mission trip, will come back without a burden for China. In America, each family will often go on a family vacation at least once a year. If we could save our time and money and use it for the whole family to go on a mission trip, maybe not once every year, but once every two years, I believe that that would be a life-changing experience for us. Last year, my three daughters came back from a summer mission trip to China with a different perspective on life and a renewed burden for the lost. What this kind of mission trip brings to us will last for a lifetime.

˙

Secondly, Revival

  A. Second, we have seen from Acts 1:8 how Jesus wanted the disciples to receive the power of the Holy Spirit so that they could be witnesses from Jerusalem to the ends of the earth. Which means when we are revived, then we can do the mission. From looking at the church history, we can see that every time revival comes to His church, it is certain that there will be a great amount of mission. One hundred years ago, there occurred a revival at a church on Azusa Street. This revival led North America churches to do mission work around the world. Many young people went out to do the mission work, as what we call one-way ticket missionaries. These young missionaries were on fire for the Lord and brought the fire of the Gospel to all the places they went to.

B. Prayer is the key to revival.

So today, our churches definitely must do the mission work. Not only to our local communities, but we must also preach the Gospel and plant churches all over the world. But what should we lean on to complete the Great Commission of the Lord? We must lean on the power of the Holy Spirit. So when the disciples heard the command given to them by Jesus, they went to pray for revival for ten days. Then, revival came. The same goes with us. We must also be like the disciples and pray for revival. Ask for the Lord’s Spirit to come upon us.

Ex. A hundred years ago, there was a revival that occurred in Korea’s capital, P'yongyang. This revival resulted in Korea’s transformation from a formally Buddhist country to a country with a population of over 35 percent Christians. Christians in Korea gathered together in groups to pray and cry out to the Lord for a revival to take place. After the revival, the church began to grow and people were on fire for the Lord. So, Korean churches do not only do evangelism and church planting in their own country but also overseas.

Today, a lot of young people in Korea wish to devote their lives to be a pastor or missionary. In Korea, becoming a pastor is one of the top ten jobs people want to have. Korea’s biggest denomination is the Presbyterian Church. There are over ten thousand seminary students studying in Presbyterian seminaries. Out of the ten thousand students, forty percent wish to become a missionary after graduating. Since the revival, the Korean church has already sent out over 18,000 missionaries across 168 countries .

So Brothers and Sisters, yes the reason the Church exists is for the sake of mission. Every Christian’s mission is to make disciples of all nations. No matter what age you are, whether you’re a man or woman, the purpose of your life is to be the witness of God both locally and globally. But if we want to preach the gospel efficiently, we have to pray and receive the power of the Holy Spirit.

Since, mission is the center of our life; I encourage you to offer yourself to God just as Paul said in Romans 12:1 “ Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices holy and pleasing to God- this is your spiritual act of worship.” Offer you time and money to do mission work Young people, I want to challenge you to devote your life to God. Ask God what his plan is for you. The harvest is ripe, but the workers are few. Every time I go to China, I can see so many people with a hunger for the Lord. But, the number of workers there does not fulfill the needs of the people. So brothers and sisters offer your life to God. If God calls you to be a pastor or missionary give up your life to serve him. It is an honor to be a pastor and an honor to be a missionary. Because he is worthy to be served.
